Chata Gil, a compassionate woman from Los Angeles, was deeply moved by the plight of stray dogs she witnessed during a visit to her family in El Salvador. Amidst her travels, she encountered a particularly neglected dog, which most people shunned due to its scruffy appearance.
At a local restaurant, the dog went from table to table, seeking scraps of food. However, diners dismissed it as “ugly” and turned it away without a second thought. Unlike others, Chata felt compelled to help the dog, despite facing ridicule from those around her for her kindhearted action.

After feeding the dog, Chata couldn’t shake it from her mind. She was determined to find it again and eventually did, spotting it curled up alone on the street. Although the dog was initially scared, fearing harm, Chata was determined to earn its trust. She fed it once more and made arrangements with El Salvador’s Miracles of Love Association to have the dog checked by a veterinarian.
The vet’s examination revealed that the dog, despite its outward condition, was clinging to life. While Chata briefly contemplated euthanasia to relieve its suffering, she decided against it. Instead, she reached out to the Saving Huey Foundation in the United States for help. This organization agreed to support the dog, eventually naming it “Sal.”

In the coming days, Chata planned to return to the U.S., while Sal received ongoing care in El Salvador to recover fully. Once Sal’s health stabilizes, arrangements will be made to transport him to Southern California.
Tracy Lystra from the Saving Huey Foundation has taken a keen interest in Sal’s wellbeing. She is actively monitoring his progress and managing his medical expenses through donations made via PayPal. Sal’s journey from being an overlooked stray to having a chance at a new life exemplifies the impact of compassion and dedication.
