For a decade, Maru endured life tied up in a secluded area close to a hazardous cliff, forgotten and neglected.
Despite his challenging circumstances, Maru held onto the hope that his situation would change one day.
Maru’s life started on a hopeful note, but at just a few months old, he was sold to a new owner who kept him chained outside.
For most of his days, Maru lived in a small, isolated shelter, perilously near a cliff, constantly at risk. The rescue team later described his harsh living conditions: inadequate shelter with a flimsy metal roof, exposure to the elements, and no choice but to relieve himself in his confined space.
Upon learning about Maru, a rescue team quickly came to his aid, heartbroken to find that he had spent his older years in such neglect.
“Over the years, we‘ve encountered several abandoned dogs, but this location was one of the worst. The small structure, which seemed like a house to the dog, was on the verge of a cliff,” they shared on Instagram.
When the rescuers approached Maru, they worried he might be aggressive or afraid after so much time in isolation. To their surprise, he greeted them warmly, wagging his tail and smiling.
Even after enduring so much, Maru was thrilled to finally have human company, as if he was expressing years of loneliness and yearning for kindness. The team took Maru to their facility, marking the beginning of his transformation.
He seemed anxious during the car ride but relaxed once he arrived and was given a generous meal. Although his thick fur made him look robust, Maru was actually undernourished and frail. His tangled coat, resembling armor, concealed his weakened state.
A thorough grooming revealed Maru’s true condition. He was much smaller than he appeared and needed to gain at least 15 pounds for good health.

Maru’s tough life had left its marks, evident in his missing teeth and the presence of stage-2 heartworms. However, his spirit remained loving and affectionate.
His caregivers are dedicated to giving Maru the best possible care in his later years, focused on ensuring he feels secure, cherished, and comfortable.
“WEACT will now become his family. We will ensure to provide him with happiness in a warm and safe environment,” they stated.
