Rescuing animals in distress is often more complex than simply bringing a lost pet to a shelter. Animals can sometimes find themselves in precarious situations, unable to free themselves without human intervention.

Whether stuck amidst rocks or caught in an unexpected predicament, these rescue missions can be formidable challenges.

Recently, a dramatic rescue unfolded when firefighters in California were alerted about a dog trapped in a canal.

The circumstances began when a passerby witnessed the dog struggling in the water and immediately called for help. Responding swiftly, the Redwood City Fire Department dispatched a team to the scene.

Fire Captain Chris Clow spearheaded the operation, using a drone to locate the troubled animal. Once found, it was confirmed to be a dog in need of assistance. Clow guided the rescue team on the ground to the dog’s location.

The frightened dog initially evaded rescuers, swimming away when they drew near. Recognizing the animal’s fear, the team kept a respectful distance while gently coaxing him towards the shore.

In Clow’s words, shared with The Dodo, he explained, “Once the boat arrived on scene and the drone was above the dog, he began to swim away from both of them toward the shore.

I was able to keep the drone close enough that the dog stayed near the shore and didn’t swim back out.”

Eventually, a rescuer carefully approached and successfully secured the dog, lifting him out of the water to safety. From there, San Mateo County Animal Control took charge, ensuring the dog received necessary medical attention at a shelter.

The firefighters and the rescue team were relieved and pleased with the operation’s success. The staff at animal control managed to locate the dog’s family, leading to a joyful reunion.

Fire Captain Clow hopes this incident serves as a reminder for pet owners to remain vigilant and secure their property gates, preventing pets from wandering into dangerous areas.

He concluded by emphasizing the value of their training, stating, “The coordination between the ground crews, the boat, and the drone is something we train for.

We are thankful that we were able to put that training to use in this situation to save the dog’s life.”
