LaChrystal Ricke, the founder and director of Reggie’s Friends, was immediately concerned after seeing a picture of a dog looking forlorn on a dirty sofa. Taking swift action, she decided to rescue him.
A concerned individual shared on social media that they had spotted the skinny dog near a gas station and wanted to help since it was an unsafe place for him to be.
Determined to find the dog, Ricke set out for the gas station early in the morning. Navigating through the dangers of the dark, she carefully examined the area upon arrival.

In a Facebook post, Ricke reached out for assistance: “I need some help, guys. I’m here but I can’t locate him. I’ll pause the search for tonight, hoping he found a secure place to rest.”
The next day, Ricke returned with two volunteers to continue the search. “They went from door to door, asking locals if they had seen him,” she recalled.

Despite initial setbacks, they were soon guided by a little female dog named Tessa, who led them to where the neglected dog was hiding among the trash.
The dog, whom they named Aniken, was in heartbreaking condition. Ricke was moved to tears upon seeing him and quickly took both Aniken and Tessa to the veterinarian.

Upon arrival at BluePearl Emergency Pet Hospital, it was clear that Aniken’s situation was dire. Not only was he infested with parasites, but he also bore the telltale signs of being a bait dog—without teeth and covered in poorly sewn-up scars.
“The injuries he had suffered were unimaginable. Being a bait dog is simply horrifying,” Ricke explained.

While Aniken received medical care and stayed at the hospital, a compassionate nurse provided him with plush toys for comfort during his recovery.
Though Aniken’s journey to healing would be long and challenging, the traumatic days of abuse were finally behind him. He now had a future filled with hope and love.
Thanks to the dedication of Aniken’s rescuers and his foster family, he is now safe and cherished.
