Messi is no ordinary cat—he’s a puma! Named after the soccer star, Messi was rescued in 2016 by Aleksandr and Mariya Dmitriev after spending the early months of his life at a petting zoo in Penza, Russia.

At just three months old, Messi’s health began to decline. Due to his condition and the fact that pumas aren’t native to Russia, the zoo couldn’t release him into the wild.

His illness also ruled out the possibility of relocating him to another zoo or sanctuary, leaving euthanasia as the zoo’s plan.

However, Aleksandr and Mariya were immediately drawn to Messi when they first encountered him at the zoo. It was “love at first sight.” Determined to give him a chance, they worked with the zoo and took Messi home.

Though weak and needing constant care, he eventually regained his strength. Today, Messi is a full-grown puma, though smaller than usual—about two-thirds the size of a typical puma.

Messi’s behavior is a unique mix of both feline and canine traits. Like a dog, he needs regular exercise, so Aleksandr and Mariya take him for walks twice a day. He also attends training classes several times weekly, where he learned ten commands.

At home, Messi enjoys classic cat activities like climbing into boxes, scratching his post, and relaxing with his family. He also loves being petted and plays gently, careful not to use his claws.

Messi’s unique story and personality have made him an internet sensation. He has over a million Instagram followers and a popular YouTube channel.

In 2020, the Dmitrievs rescued a cheetah named Ichel, who is set to join Messi on his social media adventures.
