One evening in Los Angeles, Santana was walking home when he noticed a small creature moving near his feet. It turned out to be a kitten in dreadful condition, unable to open her eyes and fighting to breathe.
Moved by the tiny animal’s plight, Santana picked her up and sought immediate help from Friends for Life Rescue Network, a local animal rescue organization.
“The kitten was alone, infested with fleas and suffering from a severe upper respiratory infection,” said Jacqueline DeAmor, co-founder of the rescue, in an interview with Love Meow.
“Her eyes were sealed shut, and she was weak, malnourished, and starving.”
Upon arriving at the rescue center that night, the organization provided the kitten with much-needed medical care, including clearing the crust from her eyes.
Despite never having cared for a kitten before, Santana decided to foster her, hoping to nurse her back to health with some comfort from a cuddly friend.
To help the kitten feel less lonely, Santana lent her a stuffed toy named Stella, belonging to his pet bunny, Stu.
The following morning, the resilient kitten was already showing signs of recovery, eating heartily and exploring her surroundings.
“She seems to like Stella,” Santana noted, adding that he had cleaned her eyes and administered medication. The kitten, whom Santana named Ashe after a fictional queen, quickly displayed an adventurous and curious spirit.
During her first week at her foster home, Ashe was notably silent, likely due to her recent illness. It took about ten days for Santana to hear her first meow, a moment that filled him with pride.
“She follows me around like I’m her mother, and sometimes I think she’s trying to drink milk from under my chin,” Santana shared.
Ashe proved to be playful, often trying to catch invisible objects, and she reserved her affectionate kneading for moments on Santana’s chest, accompanied by a soothing purr.
After several weeks of antibiotics, Ashe made a full recovery, displaying both her newfound vitality and stunning blue eyes.
Jacqueline confirmed that the once fragile kitten had gained significant weight and would soon be ready for adoption into a loving permanent home.
