On June 4, 2023, Werribee Open Range Zoo experienced an exciting event as lioness Nilo gave birth to three cubs—two males and one female.
For the past eight weeks, the cubs have spent quality time bonding with their mother, Nilo, and have recently started exploring their outdoor habitat in short bursts each day. The zoo has named the cubs Mwezi (Mw-e-zee), Kianga (Kee-ang-uh), and Jango (Jan-go).

These names are inspired by African languages spoken in regions where wild lions still roam and reflect each cub’s unique personality.

While these playful cubs have brought joy to zoo visitors, they also highlight the ongoing need for lion conservation.
Once found across northern Africa, southwest Asia, Europe, and India, lions now face a significant decline in population due to threats such as habitat loss, hunting, disease, and conflicts with livestock farmers.
The Werribee Open Range Zoo is actively involved in raising awareness and contributing to efforts to protect these magnificent animals.
The zoo invites you to enjoy a five-minute video of the cubs’ adorable adventures to celebrate their arrival.
