Last Update:

A resilient street cat, approximately six years old, was recently discovered wandering in a Montreal, Canada neighborhood. Despite enduring the severe winter weather alone, the cat fell ill and required urgent care.

The feline was brought to Chatons Orphelins Montréal in late January, where staff quickly saw how dire his situation was.

Celine Crom, a representative from the organization, explained to Love Meow that although neighbors occasionally fed him, no one truly cared for his long-term well-being.

The cat, now named Barney, was well-known in the area but faced significant challenges as the cold months set in.

Once at the shelter, Barney received the much-needed medical care. He arrived with a strong odor, watery eyes, and labored breathing due to a blocked nose. He also had parasites and ear mites—typical ailments for a stray cat.

Tragically, one of Barney’s ears had suffered frostbite, leaving it permanently folded. Additionally, he was missing a few teeth and bore many scars from past survival fights.

Yet, despite his tribulations, Barney was gentle and welcoming to those aiding him.

“This gentle giant behaves like a teddy bear, always seeking affection,” shared the rescue team. At the clinic, Barney was given antibiotics and, being FIV-positive, his health was monitored closely.

He expressed gratitude by meowing affectionately at staff and volunteers, remaining patient throughout his treatment.

Barney, described as muscular and robust, was clearly a dominant figure in his former environment. His broad cheeks, a sign of high testosterone, indicated he was not neutered.

As his eyes continued to improve, the team anticipated completing his antibiotic course soon and planned to neuter him once he was fully healthy.

“Barney eagerly pushes his head into our hands for attention during visits,” rescue workers noted. “He arrived with significant damage, but we’ve provided the time and care he needed to heal.”

While Barney’s progress is somewhat slowed due to being FIV-positive, his spirits are bright as he relishes time with his human friends, grateful for their care.

Remarkably, in just under two weeks, Barney’s once forlorn expression has transformed into one of sheer joy. He now exudes happiness and contentment.

Feel free to share Barney’s heartwarming recovery with your friends.
