When breeders overlook potential health risks in dogs, unfortunate consequences can arise. This was the case for Piglet, a charming mix of Chihuahua and Dachshund, born from two dapple-colored parents. Such pairings carry a 25% risk of producing a “double dapple” puppy, which often leads to partial or complete blindness and deafness. As a result, Piglet was born completely blind and deaf, but that hasn’t slowed him down one bit.

Piglet’s name derives from his soft, pink coat. Despite his disability, he is incredibly lovable, requiring a special family to meet his unique needs. He was discovered with 37 other puppies in a hoarding situation in Georgia before making his way to Connecticut, where he met veterinarian Melissa Shapiro. Though initially planning to foster him, Shapiro quickly became attached and, after two months, knew she was meant to keep him.

Even though Shapiro already had six dogs, she enthusiastically welcomed Piglet into her home. Taking care of Piglet initially felt like a full-time commitment. He often cried out of anxiety and became immensely attached to Shapiro, displaying severe separation anxiety whenever she left.

Over time, Piglet settled into his new environment, embracing a normal routine. He enjoys playing with his canine siblings, going on walks, and accompanying Shapiro on her business trips. His disabilities don’t hinder him from living a full and happy life.

In Plainville, Massachusetts, Piglet’s story caught the attention of a third-grade teacher, who shared it with her class to inspire them. The story of Piglet’s resilience and positive attitude serves as a lesson on overcoming adversity and celebrating diversity. Students often reflect on the motto, “What would Piglet do?” when facing their own challenges. The handmade cards the students send to Piglet are cherished by both Shapiro and Piglet.

Beyond inspiring students, Piglet and his family actively work to support special-needs rescue dogs through fundraising. They sell Piglet-themed merchandise such as t-shirts, magnets, stickers, and bags, raising over $30,000 to date.
