Yesterday, two dogs were discovered at a dumping site by a compassionate animal rescuer named Demi. After Rescue Paws Curaçao (RPC) was informed about the situation, they stepped in to support Demi and help these animals.

Demi recounted her story, explaining how her morning started as usual, waking up and heading to work. On her commute, she passed a well-known site where dogs are often abandoned, both living and deceased. This location is significant to her, as it is where she found her own dog and recently rescued two puppies named Milli and Mia. Demi regularly brings food for the dog packs residing there. On this occasion, she was looking for a pair of dogs and a woman she often encounters near the feeder.

Upon arrival, she noticed something unusual. Although the dogs she was familiar with were absent, two new and frail dogs appeared before her. They laid there beside a pile of bones, leading her to believe they had been recently discarded. One particular dog seemed to be attempting to care for the other, offering food as if trying to save its friend.

One of the dogs was so weak that it couldn’t move and was tightly chained around its neck. Demi managed to remove the chain and provided them with food and water, which they thankfully accepted. Despite needing to go to work, her thoughts remained with the dogs. She shared their photos and her concerns with colleagues, fearing that if someone else found the dogs before her return, they might not receive the care and chance they desperately needed.

After a few hours at work, Demi received the go-ahead to return and rescue the dogs. She hurried back, still in her wetsuit, and was relieved to find the animals where she left them. She quickly took them to a veterinarian to assess their condition. The vet found them severely undernourished and diagnosed them with a condition known as carpathian disease, but remained optimistic about their recovery.

Though the dogs couldn’t take oral medication due to their fragile stomachs, the vet administered some necessary injections. Demi learned she would need to bring them in for more shots the following day and was advised to feed them small portions of chicken and rice regularly.

Despite weighing only nine pounds—equivalent to a 15-week-old puppy—the male dog was the weaker of the two, unable to walk on its own. Nevertheless, both dogs were able to eat and drink. Now safe at the Rescue Paws Curaçao facility, separate from the other seven dogs in care (including six foster dogs), every effort is being made for their survival. The hope is that, with continued care and attention, these dogs will recover and thrive thanks to Demi and RPC’s efforts.
