During Saturday Night Live’s annual “joke swap,” Colin Jost humorously targeted his wife, Scarlett Johansson, with a playful jab about her movies.
“New York state now allows movie theaters to serve alcohol, which is how I’m finally able to enjoy my wife’s little art movies,” Jost quipped on the December 16 episode of SNL’s “Weekend Update.” As he spoke, an image of Johansson as Black Widow appeared on screen in the 2012 movie The Avengers.
Jost, who married Johansson in 2020, added, “I’m kidding, honey. I love all of your movies. And if you asked me, you’re an even better Black Widow than Coretta Scott King.”
The segment featured a special guest playing Hattie Davis, a fictional civil rights activist who disapproved of Jost’s comments.
This character was part of Michael Che’s portion of the joke swap, a tradition Jost and Che have upheld since 2014.
The comedians write jokes for each other without prior knowledge of the content, often leading to awkward moments.
Johansson, who has expressed mixed feelings about SNL’s live unpredictability, said during a 2021 interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, “I now rarely watch [SNL] without having a sense of … not overwhelming panic, just like a slight underwhelming panic because I just feel like at any moment something’s going to fall apart. And that’s the excitement of SNL and for all audiences, right? Because it’s live. But when you’re emotionally invested in it and not just entertained by it, it takes on a little bit of a different life.”
Jost and Johansson’s relationship blossomed after they met during an SNL episode Johansson hosted. They started dating in 2017, engaged two years later, and married in 2020. The couple welcomed their son, Cosmo, in August 2021.
A source told Us Weekly in October 2022, “Colin is a highly hands-on dad; he always makes a big fuss over little Cosmo.
They’re very into their privacy and downtime in the Hamptons, where they have a tight-knit support team and a wonderful laid-back lifestyle they wouldn’t trade for the world. They’re just a very laid-back, functional pair who have a ton of mutual respect.”
Jost is also a stepfather to Johansson’s 9-year-old daughter, Rose, from her previous marriage to Romain Dauriac.
