In a remarkable display of courage, four Indian bison, known as gaurs, confronted a giant tiger, driving it away from their herd in a tense encounter at the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve in Karnataka, India.
Photographer Praveen Siddannavar, from Bangalore, captured the dramatic scene as the gaurs banded together to protect their group from a lurking threat.

The confrontation unfolded near a water puddle, where the gaurs stood firm as the tiger approached.
Alerted to the predator’s presence, one gaur signaled the others, and they quickly prepared to defend themselves.

Mr. Siddannavar recounted that he had first spotted the massive tiger resting in the shade of dried bamboo bushes during a late afternoon drive.
As the tiger ignored alarm calls from nearby spotted deer and Sambar deer, it moved towards a culvert to cool off in a puddle.
At the same time, a herd of gaurs was also heading toward the water to quench their thirst, setting the stage for a potential conflict.

When one of the gaurs caught the scent of the tiger, the herd became alert and uneasy. Rather than retreat, the gaurs decided to take the offensive.
Charging towards the tiger with aggressive snorts, the gaurs forced the predator to reconsider its approach.
Recognizing the formidable challenge posed by the united gaurs, the tiger quickly retreated, opting for escape over confrontation.

Mr. Siddannavar expressed his astonishment at witnessing the tiger back down, a rare sight given the tiger’s status as an apex predator, usually dominant in the forest ecosystem’s food chain.
He noted that while gaurs typically aren’t fearful of other animals, their unity, strength, and bravery were on full display during this encounter.
The incident highlighted the power of unity and the effectiveness of the gaurs’ collective defense, demonstrating that even a predator as formidable as a tiger can be driven away when faced with a determined and united group.
