In Botswana, southern Africa, an extraordinary wildlife encounter unfolded as a buffalo calf narrowly avoided becoming a lioness’s prey, thanks to the valiant efforts of its protective herd.
Veterinary surgeon Ben Cranke, 54, was fortunate enough to capture stunning images of this intense battle between a lioness and a buffalo herd. The photos depict the lioness’s attack on the vulnerable calf, nearly seizing it in her claws.

However, the calf’s determined parents swiftly charged at the lioness, defending their young from the predator. Despite a fierce struggle, the lioness eventually withdrew.
The following images show the dramatic confrontation between the buffalo herd and a pride of lions in a waterlogged setting. The scene was both gripping and exhilarating for Cranke, who was on a photographic safari.

The attack was led by an 18-year-old lioness, who failed to capture the calf and was forcefully struck by an older buffalo.
This clash highlighted the raw, instinctive behaviors of the animal kingdom, revealing the fierce survival instincts and the protective nature of animal parents.
The photographs capture the desperation and fear in the baby buffalo’s eyes as it tries to escape the lioness.

Thankfully, the calf’s mother acted quickly, charging at the lioness and using her horns to butt the predator, with other buffalo joining the defense.
One powerful image shows the tense standoff between the buffalo herd and the pride of lions in the water. This encounter underscores the relentless struggle for survival in the wild.
Cranke’s photos vividly depict nature’s harsh realities and the bravery of animal parents protecting their young.
