Joel Rosenthal, a 74-year-old former biologist, has made it his mission to care for and protect bears at his bear sanctuary, Point of View Farm, in West Virginia.

Living alone on the farm, Rosenthal has formed a unique bond with the bears he rescues, even taking them on casual hikes through the wilderness.

Rosenthal provides a haven for injured or abandoned bears, ensuring they are fed and cared for properly.

He raises many of them from a young age, and some even play and eat inside his house. Over time, as they grow larger, the bears move to more spacious enclosures.

However, some bears, like Waffles, prefer to stay with Rosenthal rather than return to the wild. Waffles has a particular fondness for peanut butter and enjoys his private enclosure.

Despite his strong connection with these animals, Rosenthal acknowledges the risks they face in the wild, particularly from hunters during hunting season.

He knows that some of the bears he released have likely been killed. He aims to create a sanctuary where these bears can live without fear of harm.

Rosenthal’s dedication to the bears often leaves him isolated from other people, with months passing without human contact.

Yet, he remains committed to providing a safe environment for his furry companions, willing to do whatever it takes to ensure their protection and well-being.
