When veterinary technician Kathryn first met Sally, the young pup was in a dire state. Unable to be cared for by her breeder, Sally was suffering from pneumonia, her breathing so labored that Kathryn described her as “blue.”

Kathryn quickly recognized that Sally needed a high level of oxygen, so she devised an “oxygen bubble” environment for the puppy. It was evident that Sally, struggling to breathe, would have to remain in this oxygen-rich environment to help her fragile lungs develop.

In the weeks that followed, Kathryn dedicated herself to caring for Sally, both inside and outside the oxygen chamber. The puppy couldn’t stay outside the bubble for more than a few seconds without gasping for air. Yet, despite her illness, Sally showed a strong desire to experience life as a normal dog. She often gestured towards her caregivers, yearning for interaction and adventure beyond the bubble’s confines.

Recognizing Sally’s determination, Kathryn began taking her on short trips outside the bubble. Although initially Sally could only last about 15 seconds, these small outings provided vital exercise for her lungs. Over time, Sally’s ability to manage without the bubble’s oxygen gradually extended, from spending mere seconds to eventually lasting a few minutes.

The regular excursions and exercise started to make a noticeable difference in Sally’s breathing. To accommodate her growth, Kathryn expanded the bubble to offer Sally more room to move around.

One significant day, Sally ventured outside with Kathryn and basked in the sunshine and grass. This outing marked a turning point, as it became apparent that Sally was ready to leave the bubble behind. Although Kathryn placed her back inside for safety, Sally’s actions clearly indicated her readiness to embrace the world without the support of the oxygen chamber.

With her health improving, Sally was adopted by Kathryn’s coworker, Bonnie, who had been part of her rehabilitation journey. Sally was warmly welcomed by her new family and their other dogs.

Now free from the constraints that once held her back, Sally enjoys an active, joyful life. She has taken her first walk in the park, gone for a swim, picked out her first toy, and more — living the life that was once just a dream when she was that frail puppy in the oxygen bubble.
