When volunteers first discovered Prima, a husky lying lifeless within a small kennel, it was a heartbreaking scene. Left neglected by her previous owners, Prima had become so malnourished that she desperately consumed anything just to survive, a tragic act that almost cost her life.
Prima’s situation was critical when Jannel and Robby, two committed volunteers from Houston, Texas, encountered her during one of their routine trips to a local park.
Known for feeding abandoned dogs, they found Prima in one of the makeshift shelters by Corridor Rescue, curled up and in dire condition.
Jannel quickly realized the severity of the situation. Prima appeared skeletal with a bloated stomach, barely able to lift her head.
Her spine protruded prominently and her frame was alarmingly thin, signaling severe health issues, possibly late-stage heartworm disease. In a vulnerable moment, she cautiously accepted food and water from the volunteers.
Corridor Rescue later shared the distressing details on Facebook: “This girl was starved to the point that when she was dumped, she ate anything she came across and continued to eat.”
Recognizing the urgency, Jannel and Robby contacted Corridor Rescue immediately for help. “I was shocked at what I saw when she stepped out.
She was emaciated with a very large stomach. I immediately started making phone calls knowing she needed rescue right away,” Jannel explained.
The volunteers gently assisted Prima from her kennel to their vehicle, where a sense of calm seemed to wash over her, as though understanding she was finally safe.
At the veterinary clinic, however, the news was grim. Prima had reached the final stage of heartworm disease, and surgery was deemed nearly impossible due to the parasites invading her pulmonary artery.
Initially labeled a hospice case, she was meant to live out her remaining time in a foster home, surrounded by love.
However, after a thorough assessment, the medical team opted for an intensive treatment plan involving a series of injections over several months, despite the high risk involved.
Meanwhile, Prima was given fluids, small meals throughout each day, and antibiotics to aid her frail body in recovery. Remarkably, she began to show signs of improvement.
Her bloating reduced, energy levels increased, and slowly, her appearance started to change. Against the odds, Prima was making a comeback.
According to a Facebook post by the rescue, “She wasn’t going to let anything from her past stand in her way of a happily ever after. This little miracle refused to be held down by the word hospice any longer.”
Over time, Prima’s spirit began to flourish. She embraced joy, discovering playful moments, relaxation, and formed strong bonds with her foster family.
In a matter of months, Prima had transformed entirely. Her body filled out, her coat shone brilliantly, and her eyes gleamed with vitality.
Her foster family described her as immensely affectionate and sweet, always eager for attention and often by their side.
They humorously noted that capturing a still photo of her was challenging unless she was asleep, due to her constant activity and playfulness.
The label “hospice pup” no longer applied; Prima was healthy, joyous, and ready for a forever home. It wasn’t long before she found it—adopted by a loving family where she continues to thrive and experience the joys of being cherished.
Prima’s journey to recovery and happiness was made possible by the relentless compassion of the volunteers and rescuers who didn’t give up on her. Thanks to their dedication, a once-forgotten dog now enjoys a future filled with love and joy.
