In a heartwarming turn of events, 15 emaciated Great Danes have found a new guardian in Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun.

The dogs were rescued from an abandoned breeding facility where they were discovered on the brink of starvation. Tragically, just a day before their rescue by Watchdog Thailand volunteers, a female dog and her two puppies passed away in their cage.

The rescue took place in Pathum Thani, a location where the dogs’ owner had disappeared weeks prior, leaving them behind without care.

Relatives alerted volunteers about the situation, revealing that the site had functioned as a breeding farm for years before facing financial challenges that led to its abrupt closure and the subsequent neglect of the animals.

Devoid of proper nourishment, the Great Danes became severely malnourished, with their bones protruding starkly through their skin.

A representative from Watchdog Thailand shared that the King issued a royal decree requiring his household to “adopt” these dogs, ensuring they receive the care and support they need for recovery.

During the rescue operation, the volunteers encountered a housekeeper named Nui, who had been asked by the breeder’s cousin to oversee the property. He joined forces with the rescuers to help save the dogs.

After their rescue, veterinarian Kangwan Thirathamrong provided immediate food and medical care to the dogs before transferring them to the Livestock Development’s Animal Center.

Here, they are receiving both mental and physical rehabilitation.

Dr. Thirathamrong mentioned, “The owner claimed she was feeding the dogs, but her financial struggles meant they were still suffering.”

He added that all rescued animals require additional care and that decisions about their future will depend on whether the original owner can afford their upkeep. If not, efforts will be made to place them with dog lovers who can provide a safe home.

A spokesman from Watchdog Thailand reiterated that, as per the King’s orders, his household would take responsibility for the dogs at the Animal Welfare Division, managing their medical expenses, food, and ongoing care.

Meanwhile, the original owner could face charges under the Cruelty Prevention and Welfare of Animal Act for the neglect and mistreatment of these animals.
