While sitting in the lobby of a veterinary clinic with her own dog, Dimitra Molossi, co-director of Social Tees Animal Rescue, witnessed an unusual event.

A man entered, holding a small Chihuahua puppy, and handed it over to the receptionist, stating that the puppy was “defective” and should be put to sleep.

Molossi recounted that the man claimed to own a nearby pet business and had left animals at the clinic before when they didn’t sell.

The receptionist, upon examining the puppy, found that the only noticeable issues were a twist in the front leg and a slight difficulty in walking. Despite her challenges, the puppy was friendly, wagging her tail at everyone around her.

A vet immediately performed a check-up while Molossi contacted her rescue partners to find a temporary home for the puppy. They decided to name her Clover, symbolizing the fortunate turn of events that brought her to safe hands.

Clover’s hind legs were also slightly twisted, which the vet suspected resulted from an untreated bacterial infection and lack of physical activity in her early months.

She received X-rays and several vaccinations, and later that day, was transported to foster care with a regimen of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication.

Molossi happily reported, “She’s no longer in pain and is already improving her walk.” Initially, Clover was dirty and unkempt, reflecting the neglect she had previously endured.

Sadly, Clover’s story is not unique; many puppies in pet stores across the nation come from puppy mills, where their health and well-being are often neglected. These large-scale breeding facilities provide little to no veterinary care or human interaction.

In puppy mills, once the puppies are sold to pet stores, the mother dogs are left behind to continue breeding until they are no longer able. The puppies are often sold for high prices, despite many having unknown health issues.

Small breeds like Chihuahuas are favored in these facilities because they require less space, allowing breeders to house more dogs in confined spaces.

Many puppies never experience sunlight until sold or photographed for online ads, and the mother dogs may never see sunlight at all.

Molossi reflected, “Clover is just a baby. Hopefully, she won’t remember any of her tough beginnings.” Due to her twisted leg, she was often overlooked in the pet store, where the price might have been as high as $1,500.

Fortunately, Clover has quickly adapted and is enjoying life like any other playful puppy. Attending to her special needs, Clover’s foster mom provides her with daily massages to help strengthen her legs.

In just a few weeks, Clover will be ready for adoption into a loving permanent home.

“She doesn’t realize she’s different,” Molossi added. “She runs, plays all day, and her tail never stops wagging.”
